He’s back! Sonny Bill Williams will be returning to rugby in 2015 with an eye on earning a place on the All Blacks squad for the World Cup. It was thought that he might leave the Sydney Roosters and the NRL after just one season but he has committed to them through 2014. Williams will be returning to play with the Chiefs. He has also stated his intention of playing in the Olympics and may appear on the IRB Sevens Series as a result.
Toby Flood to France, O’Connor Too
Toby Flood’s time at Leicester is coming to a close. The club is resigned to losing him at the end of the season to a club in France. He is rumoured to be headed to Toulouse. If that happens he likely will not play for England in the future leaving open a gap which England will have to fill. Flood is still young but England have a firm policy on players playing overseas. Also headed to France next year is James O’Connor, who has been with London Irish since leaving Australia in disgrace. The move to France likely rules him out of the World Cup as well.
Saracens Run Riot
Saracens are still the top dogs in the Aviva Premiership after they destroyed Leicester 49-10 last weekend. It’s been an impressive autumn for Saracens as they look to win both the Heineken Cup and the Premiership title. Over in France Clermont have the lead but are being chased closely by Toulon and Castres. All three earned big wins. Munster lead in the RaboDirect Pro12.
And it goes on, and on, and on….
The Welsh crisis continues with no sight in end. The latest reports have the dispute between the Welsh Rugby Union and the four regions headed to court. If the regions don’t come to an agreement with the WRU by December 31st—which doesn’t seem likely—then the WRU will debate what to do with a legal move possible. Meanwhile, the former head of the WRU says the regions need to break away or face a slow death.
