November 3: Albert Goldthorpe Born

One of the most influential rugby players of his era, Albert Goldthorpe was born on this day in rugby history in 1871.  He played during the schism in English rugby that resulted in the formation or rugby league.

Goldthorpe was one of the most talented players in England and was the central figure for his hometown club Hunslet.  The fullback earned his first team debut in 1888 as a 16 year old and when he finally retired in 1910 he held records for goals and points for any player in the game.

After hanging up his boots, Goldthorpe continued to work behind the scenes for the club mainly in the capacity of the secretary-manager.

He died at the age of 72 in 1942.
