SANZAR will extend the half-time break during the 2011 Tri-Nations from 10 to 12 minutes so that the sides involved are able to adapt to the longer breaks in the World Cup later this year.

The International Rugby Board (IRB) confirmed on Friday that the half-time length at the World Cup, which starts on September 9, would be increased to 12 minutes.

The explanatin for this decision was that it would "alleviate the crush for food and toilets for fans, as well as give broadcasters more time for analysis".

However, the reality is that it will allow for more advertising time.

SANZAR chief executive, Greg Peters, said the Tri-Nations presented a perfect opportunity to assist players and managements in adjusting to the change ahead of the showpiece event.

He commented: "During Super Rugby we have had 10 minute breaks and it therefore made sense for us to trial the new format during the Tri-Nations.

"The idea has been well received and supported by our partner Unions whose respective teams will put the finishing touches to their Rugby World Cup planning during this year's Tri-Nations," Peters said.

The 2011 Tri-Nations kicks off on July 23 when Australia hosts South Africa in Sydney.
