Toulon forward Olivier Missoup is appealing against his three-month ban for attacking Montpellier's Remy Martin following a Top 14 match, his lawyer announced on Wednesday.
A court in Montpellier handed down the suspension on Monday and also ordered Missoup to pay a €3,000 (US,250) fine, as well as paying €2,600 in damages to Martin, his former teammate at Stade Francais.
Gerard Mino, Missoup's lawyer, said that he and his client would go before the disciplinary committee of France's National Rugby League (LNR) later on Wednesday.
Flank Missoup had been accused of "intentional premeditated violence committed in a sporting arena".
The incident occurred in a function room at Montpellier's ground after the home side's 19-6 victory over Toulon in a Top 14 match on September 30.
Missoup was accused of striking Martin with his elbow, prompting a brawl between the players that left Martin requiring 10 stitches in his lip.
