Cheetahs go back to a victorious venue

Super Rugby will return to the platteland (rural areas) on April 7, when the Cheetahs play the Lions at Welkom, the venue of the Cheetahs' biggest victory yet over their Johannesburg rivals.

The Cheetahs met the Lions in their last fixture of the 2010 season in the Goldfields and won by 59-10, their biggest victory margin in the competition thus far.

It is the only Super Rugby match in South Africa that will be taken back to the country communities this season and Cheetahs supporters in towns such as Wesselsbron, Hoopstad, Parys and Bultfontein will have an ideal opportunity to see their heroes in action.

Griffons CEO Eugene van Wyk said the Free State government assisted the Griffons financially to bring the game to Welkom and approximately 7,000 seats will be made available.

Van Wyk said that more than 10,000 supporters of the two franchises packed the stadium in 2010.

"We thought it would be a great idea to bring the game closer to the supporters who cannot attend every game in Bloemfontein," says Van Wyk.

Supporters in the region can plan their Easter weekend around the game.
