Mowen leading 'desperate' Brumbies

The Brumbies have announced Ben Mowen as their captain for the 2012 Super Rugby season.

Mowen has garnered a wealth of support from his teammates and coaching staff at the Brumbies since arriving for pre-season training almost nine months ago.

Along with Mowen, new head coach Jake White has also appointed three vice-captains in Stephen Moore, Dan Palmer and Pat McCabe.

An experienced leader, Mowen has previously skippered the Australian Under-21 (2005) and the NSW Waratahs development tours.

With one of the youngest teams in the Super Rugby competition, Mowen will call upon all his leadership qualities in 2012 to guide the Brumbies through to a new era.

"I'm excited because I believe in what the team can do," Mowen said.

"We have been together for close to nine months now as a team, and we have seen the benefit of those combinations through the trials.

"We have spoken about the need to be desperate as a group, and what we will and won't accept from each other as our standards for 2012.

"It's not a rebuilding year we are here for. I feel very fortunate to be chosen to represent the group, and I can see a huge self belief building within the team."

During the Brumbies long pre-season campaign, White has continually reiterated his desire to have a captain who compliments his direction and is well respected by the team.

He said Mowen filled that gap perfectly.

"With so many new faces it's taken time for the team to settle, but from the time he arrived you could see that Ben is a leader and that he has the respect of the team," White said.

"He has a long history of leading teams, in particular his work with the 2005 Australian Under-21 was impressive. That team made the finals of the tournament and with players like Ben Alexander, Benn Robinson, Adam Ashley-Cooper and Cameron Shepherd.

"I'm also pleased to announce our three Vice-Captains, who will have significant impact on how the team operates both on and off the field."
