The National Senior Men's Sevens team went into the USA Sevens in Las Vegas, NV with the momentum from a fantastic finish at the Wellington Sevens, and came home with a win in the Bowl Finals against a very competitive Australian squad on Sunday.
Earlier in the day the Canadian squad took on a hard fighting team from Japan and came away with a 21-5 victory to secure their spot in the Bowl Final.
“Japan beat Scotland yesterday and it was always going to be a tricky match. They work hard and force you to work equally hard in defence and attack," said Head Coach Geraint John.
The Canadian team came out strong in the match, leading 7-0 after the first half and scored twice more in the second to grab the win, tries scored by Taylor Paris, Ciaran Hearn and Jeff Hassler.
In the finals, the Canadian found themselves facing an Australian team which they had faced last week in the Wellington Sevens.
Fighting hard throughout the first half, the Canadians found themselves down 10-7 going into the second.
“The try from Taylor (Paris) before half-time was crucial. It seems like we are coming back from early deficits to win games quite a lot. It has become a trait of ours," said John.
With a terrific effort and never giving up at any point in the game, the squad took the lead early on in the second half. After seeing the Australians score another try, the Canadian team grabbed hold of the lead for good when Sean Duke scored his second try of the game late in the second half.
“To finally beat Australia, who we have met seven times in the last seven tournaments, is fantastic," John explained. "It is nice to finally get one over them."
With the USA Sevens coming to an end, and the Men bringing a very deserving Bowl Final win back to home soil, this caps off a tremendous two weeks of competition for the team. Not only can they be very proud of their win, but proud of their play through out the tournament.
