The Dubai Sevens Cup quarterfinals threw up two major surprises as Series champions New Zealand were knocked out by England and the Blitzbokke were downed by France.

Defending champions England reached the Cup semifinals after a dramatic 10-7 victory against New Zealand and they will face Fiji after last weekend's Cup winners defeated Australia 34-7.

France stunned the 2008/09 Series champions South Africa 19-5 in the fourth and final Cup quarterfinal to reach their first semifinal since the 2007 USA Sevens.

They will now face Argentina after Los Pumas beat Wales 7-5 in a repeat of the RWC Sevens final.

Canada will meet USA in the first Bowl semifinal after they beat Samoa in the first match of day two in the quarter-finals, meaning the 2009/10 World Series champions now enter the Shield competition for the first time.

Cup quarterfinals:

France booked a place in their first Cup semifinal since the 2007 USA Sevens after an impressive 19-5 victory against South Africa. Manoel Dall Igna, Renaud Delmas and Terry Bouhraoua all scored to set up a match with Argentina after Los Pumas defeated Wales 7-5.

Joaquin Diaz Bonilla's conversion proved decisive in that victory, after Owen B Williams had given the reigning RWC Sevens champions a 5-0 lead in a repeat of the RWC Sevens final.

Defending Dubai Sevens champions England came from 7-0 behind to beat New Zealand 10-7 in the Cup quarterfinals thanks to tries from Mat Turner and Dan Norton.

Tomasi Cama had given reigning World Series champions New Zealand the lead, but now Ben Ryan's side face Gold Coast Sevens winners Fiji in the first semifinal.

Current Series leaders Fiji began the Cup quarterfinals against Australia with a 34-7 victory thanks to two tries from Watisoni Votu and Emosi Vucago, and Joeli Lutumailagi's seventh try of the tournament.

Results:

Fiji 34-7 Australia
England 10-7 New Zealand
Wales 5-7 Argentina
South Africa 0-19 France

Plate

New Zealand will face Australia in the first Plate semifinal while Wales will face South Africa.

Bowl quarterfinals

Canada beat Samoa in the first match of day two, only their second victory against the 2009/10 Series champions in 29 matches. Sean White scored a hat-trick in the 26-17 victory, meaning Samoa move into the Shield competition for the first time.

USA will face Canada in the first Bowl semifinal after Mike Palefau's hat-trick helped them to a 41-7 victory against Zimbabwe, their second victory against the Cheetahs in five meetings.

Scotland await Portugal in the semifinals having beaten hosts UAE 40-5 with Andrew Turnbull adding two more tries to his career and tournament tally. Portugal's Goncalo Foro scored twice in their 24-12 victory over Kenya, their eighth victory in 14 meetings between the two sides.

Zimbabwe 7-41 United Sates
Scotland 40-5 UAE
Portugal 24-12 Kenya
