As the Sevens World Series gets underway on the Gold Coast, the International Rugby Board announced an exciting enhancement to the season-long event.
In a change to the points system at each round on the 2011/12 World Series, every team participating will now earn points towards the Series standings.
As part of this ranking enhancement a new third place play-off match between the two losing semifinalists has been added to the final day's play.
"Sevens is a global game and every team that arrives to play in each of the nine rounds of the World Series aspires to succeed in some capacity," said IRB Sevens Manager, Beth Coalter.
"It is only right that they should all take points away from each tournament, and this new system will also allow for more objective ranking of the teams come the end of each season.
"It is an extremely positive move forward for the game of Sevens and has the teams' full backing."
In a further enhancement there will now be a live broadcast draw of the pools for the next round in the moments preceding each Cup Final.
All matches shall be played according to the International Rugby Board (IRB) Bye Laws, Regulations and Laws of the Game with Seven-a-side variations as framed by IRB. The overall winner of the Series will be determined by the team with the most Series points as newly set out below, following adjustments made for the 2011/12 season.
