In today's daily rugby tip - brought to you by Spur Steak Ranches - we look at the line-out drive and how to use the maul as an attacking tool.
If executed properly, the rolling maul can be incredibly difficult to stop but there are a few basics that need to be adhered to first.
First you need to win clean line-out ball and ensure that the supporting players bind onto the player who takes the catch clearly and in a structured manner - ensuring support on all sides and no way through for the opposition.
The next step is to get the ball as far away from the opposition as possible while maintaining a tight bind on all sides. Ideally the hooker will join the back of the maul and hold the ball while the player who caught the line-out ball, who should have his back to the opposition pack, should be able to move his teammates into position as they drive forward.
