Springbok flyhalf Morné Steyn is reportedly set to leave the Bulls at the end of the Super Rugby season to join Top 14 club Stade Français.
Steyn is contracted to the Blue Bulls till the end of 2013 but it seems that that sort of thing can easily be adjusted, as was the case with Bryan Habana who is heading to Toulon.
Louis Luyt once said that a verbal contract was not worth the paper it was written on. The same seems true of a written contract!
So it seems that Steyn, recently a father for the first time, will be jetting to Stade Français at the end of Super Rugby to be available for the posh Parisians at the start of the French season.
The possibility has been raised by Eyewitness News Sport who spoke to Steyn's agent, Johan van Greune. Eyewitness News Sport reports that 'talks are at an advanced stage between the parties over a three-year deal'.
Van Greune said the flyhalf will however still be available for Springbok selection.
Steyn remains available to play for South Africa as François Louw, Ruan Pienaar, Heinke van der Merwe, Gurthro Steenkamp and Schalk Brits did in 2013.
Van Greune said: "Morné has spoken to Heyneke [Meyer, the Springbok coach] and they have discussed this. Obviously it is difficult to make commitments from Heyneke's side. That's one of the reasons he [Steyn] chose to go to France. It does open the door for him to play for the Springboks in the future."
Van Greune said the Bok pivot's future is not 100 percent wrapped up yet.
"There is a deal on the table and we're waiting for final paper work. The final decision to move to Stade Français has also not been taken by Morné. His contract to play for the Bulls is until the end of this year.
"We're waiting for a pre-contract from Stade Français, and then I need approval from the Bulls so that he can leave after Super Rugby, because obviously his contract is until the end of October. So, there are still a few things to be done before there's an actual contract signed.
"Obviously Morné's not getting younger, so he's decided to take on a new challenge, and the new challenge is playing overseas," he added.
