Stoddart's WC dream in tatters

Wales back Morgan Stoddart's dreams of playing in next month's World Cup in New Zealand are over after he broke his ankle during a 23-19 warm-up defeat by England at Twickenham on Saturday.

The 26-year-old was only called into the starting side shortly before kick-off when flyhalf Stephen Jones suffered a calf injury in the warm-up.

That led to Wales rejigging the team, with Stoddart - who was on the bench - taking over at fullback after Rhys Priestland moved to flyhalf.

Early in the second half Llanelli's Stoddart, also a wing, was carried off on a stretcher.

Wales captain Sam Warburton, speaking after the match, told Sky Sports: "It is gutting for Morgan. He's broken his ankle, we've just found out.

"He had a real good shout of making the World Cup squad."
