Marco Bortolami is the new Aironi skipper for the 2011-2012 season.

The International lock, who is set to take part in his third World Cup this year, skippered Aironi in 11 games during last season and he now inherits the role from Quintin Geldenhuys.

With both Bortolami and Geldenhuys looking set to play in the World Cup, Aironi's head coach Rowland Phillips has chosen hooker Roberto Santamaria to lead the team for the first part of the Celtic League season.

"I have chosen Marco because of his great experience as a captain at the highest level [a record 37 times as the Italian captain], and the Celtic League is an high level championship.

"He led the team several times during last season, he knows how to face the pressure a team will face during a Celtic League and Heineken Cup campaign - he is a natural captain," said Phillips

"Quintin did a great job for Aironi during a very tough first season, we had a great relationship that of course will continue during next season. But I want him to focus on his rugby. He's a clutch player for us and I don't want to put more pressure on him.

"During the World Cup period Roberto Santamaria will captain the team. I need someone who has captaincy experience, someone who is positive and is respected by the team.

"Roberto thick all these boxes, he's a hard worker, he wants to improve day after day, he is an example for his teammates. I'm sure he will do a great job."
