Gutted Blues beaten by better team

The magic of Quade Cooper was just one of the reasons why the Reds smashed the Blues 30-13 in Brisbane on Saturday.

The table-topping Reds outscored the Blues by four tries to one to advance to their Final in the professional era - they won the Super 10 competition in 1994 and 1995 - after the men from Brisbane lost in the Super 12 semifinals in 1996, 1999 and 2001.

Wallaby flyhalf maestro Cooper was again instrumental to the Reds' victory, while speedster Davies scored his team's first-ever hat-trick of tries in Super Rugby.

However, Blues captain Keven Mealamu felt the Reds were the better team overall.

Mealamu admitted that his team made a number of silly mistakes which let the Reds run away with the match. .

"We built up some good pressure, but let them off the hook with some little mistakes and against a quality side like the Reds in Brisbane it is going to work against you," he said.

"We should have capitalised, but we didn't take our opportunities

"I though we did well at the end of the first half, just put our noses in there [coming back from 0-15 down to trail 7-15 at the break], but you have to take your hat off to the Reds - they played really well and they were the better side."

Asked about the Reds' defence, which leaked just one try - after the hooter had sounded for half-time - Mealamu admitted his team had no answer.

"We threw everything we had at them and they came off better than us," the Blues' skipper said.

"We are gutted, we really wanted, because there are a few boys leaving at the end of the season."

He said the Blues will be back next season.

"We have definitely improved on our last couple of years, for us it is just a matter of getting that consistency up.

"We want top make sure we are there, or thereabouts, every year - we will keep building next year."
