There are suggestions in Australia that the versatile back's Bledisloe Cup place is under threat after his no-show this week, which has prompted an investigation by the Australian Rugby Union.
While O'Connor has apparently told the ARU that he slept through his alarm, a spokesman for the body told the Herald Sun: "James informed us on the morning of the squad announcement he was unable to be present.
"We have requested James provide us with a full explanation for his non-appearance. Until such time (as) we have received that explanation, we are not in a position to comment further."
