Nine different players accounted for California's 10 tries as the Golden Bears' frosh-soph team defeated Cal Maritime, 62-6, Wednesday night on Witter Rugby Field.
Cal Maritime fullback Will Fitzpatrick made 2-of-3 penalty kicks, from 28 and 35 meters, to account for the Keelhaulers' output and the first points scored against the Bears since January 20.
Freshman fullback Anthony Salaber opened the scoring with his try in the eighth minute, converted by freshman Russell Webb on a cold but calm evening. Webb connected on 2-of-4 conversion attempts and missed a penalty attempt from 30 meters before going off with an injury.
"We tried to stick to our pattern and give a full effort for 80 minutes," said freshman Patrick Barrientes, who took over the conversion duties (4-of-6) for Webb and scored two tries. "It's a work in progress but we're working on it."
Room for improvement remained evident in the second half as the Keelhaulers (7-1/7-0) got onto the scoreboard and reduced the number of minutes under pressure in their half of the field. Cal Maritime is coached by Steve Hiatt, a former U.S. National Team player in both 15s and 7s who earned his economics and MBA degrees from Cal and was named a rugby All-American his senior year as an undergraduate playing under head coach Jack Clark.
"We played pretty well at times but we need to refocus to get ready for Cal Poly," said sophomore Michael Bush, who played all 80 minutes Wednesday night and was in the lineup last February as a freshman when Cal Poly ended a 63-match Bears winning streak with a 22-20 decision in San Luis Obispo. The Mustangs are Cal's next opponent on Saturday, Feb. 9, at 2 p.m.
Following that match against Cal Poly, the Bears (8-0/1-0) continue their seven-match homestand the following Saturday, Feb. 16, on Witter Rugby Field with the opening match of the "World Cup" series against the University of British Columbia at 1 p.m.
