The Golden Bears traveled two sides Saturday to the West Coast Rugby 7s Invitational hosted by Cal Poly at Talley Fields, where both California teams ended a long travel day with 4-1 records.

Thirty student-athletes wore the blue and gold as minutes abounded in the 14-team tournament. By fielding two sides, Cal I and Cal II, the Bears joined the host Mustangs, Saint Mary's and Santa Clara in bringing multiple teams to the tournament.

The Bears' top side went 3-0 in pool play to advance to the cup semifinals, where it faced the Gaels' top side for a berth in the final.

Captain Seamus Kelly put the Bears on the board early and Anthony Lombardo's try made it 12-7, Cal I, in the second half, but two late tries by the Gaels' Garrett Brewer gave Saint Mary's a 17-12 win.

In the other pool, Cal II defeated UCLA's top side, 17-5, to end its day with a win that included tries by freshmen Charles Guiraud and Anthony Salaber to start and finish the contest.

The Bears return to Berkeley to begin immediate preparations for the Stanford 7s, a one-day tournament held at The Farm on Saturday, Oct. 13.
