The Golden Bears dropped a 26-17 decision to Saint Mary's before defeating Santa Clara and University of San Diego at the California 7s Sunday on Pat Vincent Field.

"Saint Mary's did a really good job with the organization of the event," said head coach Jack Clark. "Because there are not too many rugby tournaments anymore, we tend to forget how much fun they are. This will be one of the positives to a full fall sevens season."

California was captained on Sunday by freshman Andrew Battaglia, who played well in four starts during the tournament. The Bears also got strong play from fellow freshman Eakalafi Okusi as well as sophomores Jake Anderson, Paul Bosco and Hunter Frisinger as Cal exited the weekend with 28 tries scored, more than any other team in the competition.

In the Bears' three losses at the California 7s, Cal matched San Diego State and Cal Poly with two and three tries in those respective contests, and notched three tries against four scored by the Gaels. By losing those matches by two, six and nine points, Cal proved each of its missed conversions to be costly.

"Overall our performance was just about in the range I thought it would be," coach Clark said. "The three teams that beat us were a nudge better than us - not a lot, but a bit."

What has shown itself to be a young team certainly benefitted from the weekend's tests. Among the 15 players on Cal's tournament squad, only Connor Ring is scheduled to graduate this year, and he is one of only three student-athletes on the entire roster who will matriculate after the spring season.
