College Premier Division Renamed 'Division 1A'

The USA Rugby elite collegiate men’s competition will kickoff in March 2012 under a new name: USA Rugby Men’s College Division 1A.

Formerly known as the College Premier Division, the competition's new name is designed to more closely align it with the college sports model and, ideally, engage new rugby fans by making the emerging sport more relatable. The name change has support from the majority of the teams in the competition.

The new name also helps delineate between Division 1 programs, making clear there are two subdivisions of Division 1 men's college rugby.

Division 1 men's college teams not in Division 1A will compete in Division 1AA. Both Division 1A and Division 1AA will compete for respective National Championships.

Division 1A is conference-based with four conferences; Rugby East, Mid-South, Western, and Pacific.

The elite competition had a successful inaugural season in 2011, featuring fantastic games and great rivalries. The season ended with a thrilling championship game that saw the University of California – Berkeley win the first-ever Division 1A (then College Premier Division) title in May of this year.
