Hosts South Africa got off to a winning start at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium, beating Canada 33-0 to the delight of the crowd, while the other big teams also recorded opening victories.
Earlier, Osea Kolinisau scored the first two tries of the South African-leg of the Sevens as the current Series leaders Fiji beat Portugal 31-7 in the opening match.
Owen B Williams' two tries assisted Wales in their 42-7 victory against Zimbabwe before last week's Dubai Sevens Cup champions England defeated USA 26-7. Samoa put their disappointing Shield title from Dubai behind them to edge Argentina 17-5 whilst France defeated Scotland 31-7.
New Zealand proved too strong for 2011/12 Sevens World Series debutants Morocco, as the reigning World Series champions scored seven tries in a 39-7 victory.

Dubai Sevens champions were handed a tough draw for this weekend's tournament as they are joined by Dubai Cup semifinalists Argentina, USA and 2009/10 Series champions Samoa who lifted the Shield at the Sevens.
Ben Ryan's side got off to a winning start, beating Al Caravelli's USA 19-7 thanks to tries from James Rodwell, Marcus Watson, Mat Turner and Nick Royle.
Last week's Shield winners Samoa put their disappointing Dubai campaign behind them to beat Argentina 17-5 in their opening pool match. Paul Perez, Simaika Mikaele and Faalemiga Selesele all scored for the 2009/10 World Series champions.

The 2011 Dubai Sevens Cup runners-up France recorded a 31-7 victory in their opening Pool B match, despite conceding the first try to Scotland's Andrew Turnbull.
Terry Bouhraoua scored twice in the match, with Paul Albaladejo, Mathieu Acebes and Julien Jane also crossing following their first Cup final in six years at the Sevens.
They sit third in the Series standings on 29 points alongside New Zealand, and South Africa, and they will meet each other in the penultimate match of day one at 20:16.
Gordon Tietjens' side proved too strong for Morocco, a side that hasn't competed on the World Series since 2003, scoring seven tries in the 39-7 victory, including one for Kylem O'Donnell on his debut and a hat-trick for Toby Arnold.
The biggest cheer however came for Samir Thevenot who scored the last try of the match for Morocco.

South Africa began their campaign on home soil by beating Pan Am Games champions Canada 33-0 thanks to tries from Branco du Preez, Chris Dry, Steven Hunt, Cornal Hendricks and Mark Richards.
The hosts lost to Australia in the Plate final in Dubai but will have a chance to reverse that result in the final pool match of day one at 20:38.
Paul Treu has welcomed Cecil Afrika back into his squad having missed Dubai, and they now face Kenya in their second pool match.
Last week's Plate winners Australia defeated Kenya 31-14 to end the first round of pool matches as Lewis Holland. Greg Jeloudev, captain Ed Jenkins, Jordan Tuapou and Pama Fou all scored for Michael O'Connor's side.
