Uruguay made their international debut in 1948 and have remained a pugnacious South American side despite a lack of regular competition. While not always a consistently successful team, they remain surprisingly good given the size of their playing pool and stay near the top of the South American rugby standings. The movie “Alive” was also based on a Uruguayan rugby team, one of the survivors stating that if not for the lessons he picked up playing rugby and strong bonds of rugby brotherhood he would not have been able to make it.
