A few years ago I attended a meeting with the SANZAR Nations in Wellington to discuss the possible expansion of the Super 14 Rugby Competition (as it was at that point). Joining me at the meeting were representatives from Argentina, Canada and Japan, all presented their case, we had a nice dinner, we were sent on our way and Super Rugby announced their exciting plans to award a franchise to Melbourne – really!

This week I read that Greg Peters, SANZAR CEO, is now talking about the opportunity to expand Super Rugby and to maybe set up a Pacific Conference, he is on the right track and we in the USA are happy to talk. I still believe that is the best strategy for Super Rugby and a great opportunity for rugby in America, opening up new markets and breathing new life into a competition that seems to have lost its way a bit in recent years. Fans, sponsors and broadcasters like to see things that are different, this opportunity will certainly do that.

I would be interested to hear the thoughts of the readers of this blog on the expansion of Super Rugby, and a possible Super Rugby franchise in the USA. I will be catching up with Greg shortly, and I look forward to showing him, I already have the presentation ready to go!
