Meya Bizer had an MVP performance with a personal haul of 21 points to lead the USA Women’s U-20s to a big victory in the Emirates Airline USA Rugby Women’s College All-Stars.
The Western Mustangs came into the match riding the high of a 24 -15 upset of the defending champion Midwest in the first round of the tournament to reach the Tier one Championship.
The U-20s entered the championship match after pummeling the South 53-17 in the opening round, and they would come into the final hungry for more.
The opening ten minutes were all West however. The mustangs were able to pressure the U-20s into making mistakes, and controlled possession for a large portion of the opening spell. That pressure would not be sustained.
Fifteen minutes in, Jasmine Smith-Sharp sliced through two defenders and made a 20 meter break. Sharp then pinned the last defender and offloaded to Rose Bernheim who sprinted 20 meters for the opening score.
Meya Bizer kicked the first of her 21 points when the West was pinged for not releasing, and the U-20 lead grew to 10-0. Just minutes later, the West was pinged again and Bizer’s kick was again on song. 13-0 to the U-20s, and they were just getting warmed up.
The USA U-20s began to get comfortable with their attack, and started to get on the front foot. This became evident when the West was again penalized and #6 Katie Johnson took a quick tap on the penalty instead of opting for the points. The gamble paid off as Johnson caught the West off guard and dove in for another U-20s try.
It wouldn’t take long for the 20’s to get moving again, when almost right from the kickoff, wing Maggie Myles collected a pass and used her pace to turn the corner around the West’s defense, and just like that it was 27-0.
The U-20s would start to dominate every aspect of the game in the second half. Tries from Natalie Kosko and Amee Svatos would keep the West from every really getting much opportunity to run.
The Nail in the West’s coffin came when MVP Meya Beizer broke a tackle and found herself in plenty of space to outpace the defense for a beautiful 70 meter try. That bit of individual brilliance brought the score line to 51-0 to the U-20’s.
The final score of the match came from replacement Casey Karl, who is still in High School and just 16 years old. Karl’s try brought the final tally to 56-0, and finished off an overall dominant performance by a young and talented U-20 side.
In the Tier one consolation match, the Midwest Thunderbirds put a 36-7 thumping on the Pacific Coast Grizzlies.
Five different Thunderbirds dotted down for a try in the match. Melissa Krug of the University of Minnesota led all scorers with 13 points from a try and four conversions.
In the 5th/6th place match, a last gasp try from wing Rhiannon Clark put the South on top of MARFU 10-7 to win the match at the death.
