Following their national collegiate championship, the Golden Bears have had nine members selected as 2011 All-Americans by USA Rugby.

The June 17 announcement brings to 125 the all-time number of All-Americans from California as named by rugby's governing body in the United States.

The newest members of Cal rugby's All-America ranks are flyhalf James Bailes, prop James Besser, prop Jeremy Deterding and lock Drew Hyjer.

Bailes and Besser have also received recognition as 2011 All-Americans by Rugby Magazine. Besser was previously a 2010 All-America selection by American Rugby News, while Hyjer was a USAR honorable mention last year.

Claiming their second All-America selection from USAR are back-rowers Derek Asbun and Danny Barrett, as well as outside center Seamus Kelly, who also earned RM's All-America honor. Danny Barrett was previously recognized as a 2010 All-American by Rugby Magazine.

Wing Dustin Muhn and wing/fullback Blaine Scully received their fourth straight USAR All-America selections. Both players also earned RM's All-America honors for 2011, and were All-America selections by American Rugby News in 2009 and '10. Scully was also tabbed as an All-American by Rugby Magazine in 2010, while Muhn garnered a 2010 RM honorable mention.

The five USAR All-America honorable mentions for 2011 are hooker Neill Barrett, forward Brendan Daly, inside center Sean Gallinger, lock/flanker Jason Law and flanker Tom Rooke. Neill Barrett, previously an RM honorable mention, and Rooke also got nods as 2011 RM All-Americans. Rooke was selected an ARN All-American in 2010, while Gallinger was named a USAR All-American in 2010.

Also receiving postseason honors was lock/flanker Ryan Hodson, a one-year exchange student who was named a 2011 All-Collegiate selection by Rugby Magazine.

In all-star competition earlier in June, sophomores Josh Tucker at wing and Alex Bowman at lock were joined by junior scrumhalf Kyle Caravelli as starters for the Pacific All-Stars as the Grizzlies advanced to the semifinals of the National Collegiate All-Star Championships.

In late May and the beginning of June, freshman Patrick Coleman followed up his promising freshman season at Cal with four matches in June for the U.S. U-20 National Team at the Junior World Rugby Tournament in Tbilisi, Georgia, where Coleman started at lock against Samoa, Russia, Uruguay and Zimbabwe.

Congratulations to all these student-athletes for their achievements.
