The 23-year-old Glasgow Warriors fly-half has won eight caps, his most recent coming as a replacement for Dan Parks during the 23-12 World Cup warm-up win over Italy.
Until the date with the Azzurri, Jackson had started four straight Tests after succeeding Parks as Scotland's leading playmaker during last season's Six Nations.
Experienced campaigner Parks, who has won 62 caps, is determined to retain the jersey.
But Jackson hopes a strong display in either the Pool B opener with Romania on Saturday or against Georgia four days later will prove he is the number one candidate for the pivotal position.
Jackson said: "Last season I put myself in a good position to try to get that number 10 jersey.
"Parksy's going to put up a bit of a fight and he played very well against Italy - he's put down a bit of a marker.
"I've no idea what's going to happen for the first game, but once I get my chance I'm hopefully going to play well enough to take it."
The duration between the Romania and Georgia matches, both of which take place in Invercargill, suggests it is inevitable Scotland head coach Andy Robinson will make changes.
Jackson added: "There's a very short turnaround between the two games.
"I've got no idea what Robbo's thinking about that but I presume there's going to be a number of changes for each game.
"Hopefully if I get my chance then I'll grab it."
Jackson made his debut as a replacement against New Zealand in the opening autumn Test last season and anticipates the World Cup will be a level above anything he has experienced so far.
He added: "I'm sure it will be another notch up.
"We've seen in previous World Cups that minor nations, so to speak, seem to perform way above expectations and really give quite a few teams scares.
"We know the games against Romania and Georgia are going to be another big Test match and we've got to be at our full capacity to put those teams away.
"Once we get into the Argentina and England games it's going to be another step up.
"Playing England in a World Cup is going to be pretty special and an intense game, no doubt."
