Williams: Feels he has silenced his critics

The All Blacks will face trans-Tasman rivals Australia in Auckland on Sunday, with Williams having caught the eye with his offloading talents.

And despite having been forced out on to the wing due to the form of Ma'a Nonu and Conrad Smith in the midfield, Williams insists he proved his worth to the squad.

The 26-year-old, who made his name playing in the second row in rugby league before crossing codes, said: "I've surprised myself how well I've played on the wing.

"Some people didn't think I could play rugby (union), I showed them that I can. I'm always a confident player and if I'm put out there (on the wing) I'll do the job as best I can, just do the little things and it all comes good.

"I'm doing all the little things right, I'm ticking all the boxes during the week and staying in the now, not looking back at the past or what's happened."

Williams has constantly handed coach Graham Henry a selection headache - with the former Toulon back having initially been competing for a place in the centres before the switch to the wing.

And with Richard Kahui and Cory Jane also competing for a place on the flankers, Williams believes the battle for places has had a positive impact on the squad.

"Competition is fierce within the team," Williams added. "But it's a good competition and it brings the best out of us.

"Hopefully, I'll get picked and I'm involved. If I am, that's great."
