Head coach Graham Henry has named a team showing six changes in personnel and one positional switch following the 79-15 win over Canada.
Ma'a Nonu and Corey Jane return to a back division which sees Sonny Bill Williams move to the wing and Piri Weepu take over at scrum-half, with Colin Slade continuing at fly-half following the tournament-ending injury to Dan Carter.
In the forwards, captain Richie McCaw returns at flanker despite an ongoing foot injury, Keven Mealamu at hooker and Brad Thorn at lock.
Muliaina retained his place and Williams was selected on the wing in part due to injuries to Zac Guildford (hamstring), Israel Dagg (thigh haematoma) and Richard Kahui (hamstring).
Henry is looking forward to the knockout stages beginning.
He said: "There has been a real feeling of positive anticipation in the squad this week now that we have finished the pool play rounds and are into the quarter-finals.
"There is excitement amongst the team and we have had a good build-up on the North Shore this week, but there is also a realisation that this is sudden death, finals rugby.
"We have the utmost respect for Argentina. They showed in their pool matches, especially against England and Scotland, just how physical their game is, especially at set-piece and at the breakdown."
Muliaina, who made his All Blacks debut in 2003, has captained the team in three Tests in 2009 and has scored 34 Test tries, is set to become the second New Zealander to reach 100 caps, following McCaw to the milestone.
Henry said: "I want to congratulate Mils on this outstanding achievement.
"He is a special man and has been a world-class All Black for many years - the consummate professional really - as well as a very influential member of the All Blacks leadership group."
Aaron Cruden, who was called into the All Blacks to replace Carter, has been named on the bench.
Team: M Muliaina, C Jane, C Smith, M Nonu, SB Williams, C Slade, P Weepu; T Woodcock, K Mealamu, O Franks, S Whitelock, B Thorn, J Kaino, R McCaw (capt), K Read.
Replacements: A Hore, B Franks, A Williams, V Vito, J Cowan, A Cruden, I Toeava.
