When Catt and the England coaching staff returned from watching New Zealand beat South Africa 32-16 in Soweto earlier this month, they were struck by the sheer ruthlessness of the All Blacks.
On that day, New Zealand had to weather a ferocious Springbok assault and cope with a lop-sided penalty count but the accuracy of their execution saw them beat the hosts by four tries to one.
When the All Blacks are on the front foot they can be even more devastating - and that is Catt's vision for England over the years ahead.
"You look at New Zealand and the way they get one opportunity and score it," Catt said.
"New Zealand are very good and accurate at what they do. They are on the front foot a lot of the time and they can bring the big guys into the game.
"Everybody is going to want to get to that situation. It is how we get there and how long it takes us to get there.
"I am not saying it's not there (in the English players) but we have got to get to that, having that belief we can do it.
"It is about seeing the opportunities and understanding it. That is my role.
"From an attacking point of view, I want to see speed of the ball and movement of the ball."
Ugo Monye will hope to be the one scoring the tries this autumn after being promoted into the senior squad as injury cover for Ben Foden on the back of an electric start to the Aviva Premiership season.
The Harlequins wing has already scored five Premiership tries and is itching to win his first cap since being carried off on a stretcher against Scotland in 2010.
"Ugo has been in great form," England assistant coach Andy Farrell said.
"He is hungry to get back to Test level and prove his worth. You can see that with his performances."
England have fast-tracked Saracens loosehead prop Mako Vunipola into the Test squad after just four Premiership starts as injury cover for Alex Corbisiero.
"I have no doubt he will make his name in this autumn series. I have got every confidence in him," forwards coach Graham Rowntree said.
"I am looking for a fault in his game and I can't find one at the moment.
"I like his commitment to every aspect of the game. He is a dynamic ball-carrier and he loves a scrum and you know that turns me on!
"He respects all the hard yards, the tackling, the clearing-out, the scrummaging. He has got his priorities right."
