Wigglesworth: Named in England's 30-man squad

The Saracens player was one of three scrum-halves selected in Martin Johnson's 30-man squad for the tournament in New Zealand.

However things may have been different had Harlequins' Danny Care, considered a certainty to travel, not been ruled out through injury.

Wigglesworth admits he feels for his good friend Care, who was seen as the likely back-up to first choice No.9 Ben Youngs.

But with Youngs still recovering from knee surgery, the former Sale Shark has the chance to cement his place in the team for England's opening World Cup match against Argentina on September 10.

"I came into the squad aiming to go to the World Cup and that has happened. When we got the phone calls I was confident I had done everything I could do," said Wigglesworth.

"Now I am aiming to play - and I have to keep working hard to make that one happen.

"I was gutted for Danny, he is a good mate of mine and I didn't want to see that happen. I have to get on with what I am doing."

Wigglesworth and Neil de Kock had shared the scrum-half duties at Saracens all last season as the London club went on to win the Aviva Premiership title.

Part of Wigglesworth's motivation for leaving Sale after nine years was to kickstart his international prospects after being overlooked by Johnson.

"I got picked (in the 2008 Six Nations) under Brian Ashton and went on the tour of New Zealand which didn't go well," he admitted.

"A lot of us didn't get picked in the next squad and that is fair enough, you have to take responsibility for what happens.

"It took me about six months to get over being dropped and then I set about working as hard as I could to get back in the squad.

"It was a difficult decision to move clubs but I had a great first year at Saracens. They have been great for me. I just keep learning.

"It has been a long process but one that makes it feel a bit sweeter to be here now. I feel as if I have achieved something."
