January 20 – This Day in Rugby

Rugby League Expelled from Russia

The arguments between fans of rugby league and rugby union can be endless but the Russian Ministry of Sports ended all talk on this day in rugby history in 2010 when they expelled the Rugby League from the State Register of Sports of Russia.

The move came with the goal of improving rugby union and the governments hope this would improve chances of positive results in rugby union sevens, recently added as an Olympic sport.

With the top teams moving from rugby league to rugby union, it has been difficult to get momentum or backing to a new rugby league.
