The second of the so-called Munster ‘Miracle Matches,’ Munster defeated the Sale Sharks 31-9 in the final pool game of the 2005/06 Heineken Cup on the way to their first title on this day in rugby history in 2006.
The task at hand before kickoff was daunting as the home side needed to score 4 tries and deny Sale a bonus point in the match
The game played into their hands with Sale’s enforcer Sebastian Chabal knocked to the ground on the opening kick and then the home side finding tries in the 13, 28th, 36th and 81st minutes.
Munster were through to the quarterfinals but got extra help by earning the right to host that quarterfinal when Leinster beating Bath on the next day in equally impressive style. Leinster had to defeat Bath and deny them a bonus point as well.
Munster went on to down Biarritz in the final for their first Heineken Cup silverware.
